Flowerpots and Gift Packaging out of Milk Cartons
We absolutely love upcycling! It is not only great for our environment but also allows us to let our creativity run free! For instance, within a few steps, we can turn an empty milk carton into an adorable planter or a charming gift packaging for a little surprise! How does it work? We will show you right here!
For this project you will need:
- empty milk cartons
- watercolor or ink painting
- a sponge
- paintbrushes
- pencils for decorating
- paper towels
- a glass of water
As soon as you have an empty milk carton, rinse it out with some water. Cut about a quarter of the upper carton – as long as the screw cap and its opening are out of sight, you are good to go. In case there are any remains of milk inside, use this phase to clean it thoroughly. Use your fingers to carefully pull off the first layer of the carton’s packaging from top to bottom. For some more detail on your carton, evert the upper edge a little. To do this, dip the edge shortly in some water, so the material does not get any cracks.
Now let us get to some colors! Prepare some paper towels or some old newspaper on your working surface to put your carton on – this way you are sure to leave no stains behind and let your masterpiece dry out in peace. Take a brush or sponge to wet your carton with some water. We do not want the carton to be dripping wet but simply be a little moisturized. Now select your favorite colors and paint your carton! If you would like to get a pretty gradient of colors, take a wet sponge, dip it in some color and simply dab it a few times on your carton before you pass over to another color. The same trick works just as fine with paintbrushes. In case the surface becomes too dry, simply dampen it with some more water. As soon as the colors have dried out, take a pencil and outline some cute drawings or a personal note before painting it on permanently with some markers.
All that is left now are some beautiful flowers that fit into the carton and your wonderfully homemade gift is done! The painted box is also perfect for other little surprises and can be furtherly decorated with some cute ribbons and bows. Finally, our postcards, magnets and bookmarks will give your Mother’s Day gift a nice finishing touch filled with love!

Homemade Chocolate Bars!
As you have already seen, our upcycled milk cartons do not just look great as flowerpots but also work beautifully as a gift packaging for some sweets or other little surprises. How about some homemade chocolate? The great thing about this idea is that the recipe can be easily adjusted. Although we will present you with a guideline, you can definitely choose and mix the ingredients by your preference. This way, you can easily adapt the chocolate to your mother’s taste and get wild in the kitchen!
For our recipe you will need:
- 500g dark chocolate
- 500g white chocolate
- 50g coconut oil
- 1 tbsp pistachio nuts
- 1 tbsp coconut flakes
- 1 tbsp chocolate nibs
- 1 tbsp sugar pearls
- 1 tbsp freeze-dried strawberries
- 1 tbsp almonds
First, get the chocolate bars and break them into small pieces. Place one type of chocolate in a metal bowl and mix it with about 25g of coconut oil each. Prepare a water bath by boiling some water in a pot and then placing your bowl on top. In case you would like to keep the contrast in color, melt the white chocolate first, then clean the bowl for the dark chocolate or simply use two separate bowls. Put some baking paper on a baking tray or baking dish and spread the melted chocolate on top of it. If you melted the different chocolate bars separately, you could now create a beautiful pattern by mixing the two colors in the middle. Finally, you can decorate your chocolate with your selected ingredients. For example, you can use a big knife to chop the nuts and then spread it on the chocolate along with some fruit, sugar pearls and coconut flakes until you are ready to leave it to dry out completely.
As soon as your chocolate has become solid, take a long sharp knife and dip it in some hot water. You should be able to cut the chocolate in small bars without any problems now. Wrap your chocolate up in some foil bags or baking paper and place everything in your upcycled milk carton! Everything that is left to do is to say “thank you!” with one of our cute PICKMOTION cards and you are good to go for the upcoming Mother’s Day!
